When we experience pain, the biological human response is to remove ourselves from that state of pain.

If we touch a hot kettle, our hand instantly moves away from it and we rush to open the tap of running cold water to alleviate the pain and remedy the burn from our hand. When we cut our finger, depending on how deep the cut is, we apply pressure to stop the bleeding before disinfecting it.

All of our focus and attention from life and our everyday tasks, has been re-diverted to stopping this unpleasant feeling first, before regaining our composure and state of calm reassurance that everything is alright.

As such, when we experience emotional pain, it’s difficult to focus on anything else in life as long as the feeling persists and we are unaware of how to stop it.

Stress and psychological injuries are known for its notoriety of causing chronic states of helpless, crippling anxiety and depression — making it difficult for an individual to be mentally, emotionally and physically well.

However, it’s not the end, and for those that are experiencing stress and are going through emotional times — you have the capacity to “push through” this situation.

From these experiences, I have learnt that balancing life and properly handling stress requires us to be compassionate, to be brave and hopeful — to have the right mindset towards the way we approach and live life!

Be Kind

Pointing blame or, attributing the cause of all suffering towards a certain factor, is our go-to response to make sense as to why we are suffering.

Many of our peers and other societal influences have molded us to think a certain way and to have accountability for our own lives — avoiding the things that are bad for us while pursuing the strategic path that would bring us success or happiness. As such, it comes off as a puzzling fact when we encounter stressful situations and emotional suffering — knowing full well that we have given our commitment to pursuing growth and self-development. We may end up placing blame towards other external factors or even blaming ourselves for that matter — wounding our own self-worth and self-esteem, in an attempt to rationalize and pinpoint the source of our distress.

What if, instead, we allow ourselves to just feel and meditate with what we are feeling — without judgement, blame or guilt?

Instead of ruminating or thinking too hard about “why are we hurt?”, what if we acknowledge that “I am hurt and in pain — but that’s okay.” — wouldn’t that be reassuring?

Why don’t we allow ourselves to establish healthy boundaries and a space to breathe in order to alleviate the discomfort we are feeling?

In time, we may be able to make sense of this suffering — or at the very least find closure to it — in order for us to move forward in life.

So, when you’re in that state of suffering , be the first one to show yourself kindness, love and unconditional support.

As the saying goes… “There’s a time for everything.”

and right now, if you’re suffering, it’s time for you to be kind to yourself and find healing.

Be Brave — Have Hope!

After finding the time to process your emotions and the experience that has transpired, you may be wondering “what now?”.

I would say: “pick up from where you last stopped and keep moving forward!”

A lot of individuals find that their lives may seem disorienting, or unfamiliar even, after coming back from a hiatus. It’s natural to feel initially overwhelmed by the whole situation so tackle everything, one problem at a time. You may be afraid of the uncertainty that the future holds or if you have the strength to endure the hardships and sufferings that may arise.

If there’s one thing this experience has revealed it’s that — you are stronger than who you were before!

The fact that you chose to prioritize your own well-being and care for yourself mean that you desire to feel better and to get back on track. You desire to continue this journey of growth and development in order to achieve the dreams you have for yourself.

So whenever you encounter the intimidating obstacles that obstruct your path to success, look to your past — realizing that you’ve grown so much and you continue to do so by persevering and stepping up to life’s challenges! Let this realization fuel you with the courage to tread forward and embrace the unknown.

May it remind you to continue to have hope in yourself, hope in the world and hope in your process!
